The history the spa complex dates back to 1620 when mineral water that was said to cure minor ailments was discovered on this site. Today the original well is still visible but little else remains of the early building. The present building dates from the 18th century and was created due to the popularity of the spa waters, which attracted thousands of visitors every year. In the 1930s this water was declared unfit for human consumption and the well was sealed off. Today the Spa complex is a unique building that houses a theatre, conference rooms, banqueting halls, a café, a restaurant, bars and exhibition rooms. It is open daily throughout the year. The long distance walk “The Cleveland Way” passes close to this attraction.
