Hillsborough Park covers an area of 50 acres and is one of the largest public parks in the city. It is located about 5 kilometres to the north west of the city centre and includes Hillsborough Hall within its grounds. Hillsborough Hall dates from 1779 and was the family home of the Dixon’s, a prominent family in the region during the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1897 a large area of the current park was bequeathed to the city council and the hall followed in 1903. Today the hall is a Grade 2 listed building and houses the local library. Within the park there is a fishing lake, a children’s playground, tennis courts and a sports pavilion. Throughout the year the park plays host to several fairs, festivals and other outdoor events. Entry to the park is free and it is open at all times.
