St Mary's Island (Whitley Bay, United Kingdom)

St Mary’s is a small island off the shore of Whitley Bay which is connected at low tide by a causeway. It has been the site a chapel since about 1100. A lighthouse was built on the island in 1898 and remained in active use until 1984. The island is now a wetland and foreshore nature reserve for birds and marine life. Views to Scotland and North Yorkshire can be obtained from the lantern room at the top of the lighthouse which is reached up a 137 step staircase. The visitor centre and shop are manned by The Friends of St Mary’s Island.
