York Railway Station (York, United Kingdom)
The first railway station in York was built in 1839 but the present station dates from 1877. This station was designed by the architects Thomas Prosser and William Peachey. When it opened it had 13 different platforms and was the largest railway station in the world. In 1909 further platforms were added but the station was heavily damaged during the Second World War. York Railway Station lies on the main East Coast Mainline connecting London with Edinburgh and thus attracts over 6 million passengers every year. The interior of the station has recently been refurbished and there are numerous shops inside and places to eat. There are also modern seating areas with toilets and baby changing facilities, including some women only waiting areas. All of the platforms are fully accessible by wheelchair users.
