Runswick Bay is a natural cove with a sandy beach. The north winds are sheltered from by Lingrow Knowle, a grassy hilltop that overlooks the bay. Around the bay the cottages are painted white with neat little gardens earning it a reputation as “one of the loveliest bays in the north of England”. The natural harbour has been used as a safe landing for fishing boats for over six centuries and its history is steeped with stories of pirates and shipwrecks. During the summer months over 500,000 visitors descend on Runswick Bay but during the winter it is quiet and its streets are empty.
