Review summary

This AI-generated summary was based on reviews from multiple
sites

The hotel's iconic Victorian architecture and historical grandeur make it a memorable landmark, offering a unique sense of stepping back in time. Many guests find it offers excellent value for money, particularly for last-minute bookings, making it an appealing choice for budget-conscious travelers. The hotel's prime location is consistently praised, providing easy access to the seafront and local attractions. While the overall experience is often positive, feedback on room quality and cleanliness can be mixed. The availability of various entertainment options, such as cabaret shows and bingo, adds to the appeal for families and couples seeking a traditional seaside getaway. To ensure a smoother experience, guests are advised to have photo ID ready for check-in, as this can sometimes lead to queues. Additionally, some visitors recommend bringing an extra pillow for enhanced comfort during their stay.

Facilities & Amenities
The hotel's public areas are frequently highlighted for their grand, ornate, and historic ambiance, with many guests appreciating the comfortable seating and the impressive sun terrace that offers wonderful views. However, some note that the terrace can be affected by bird mess. The lifts are a recurring topic, often described as slow and small, with some experiencing issues or unpleasant smells, particularly in the "blue lift" serving certain areas. While Wi-Fi is available, its reliability and cost can vary, with some guests reporting good connectivity and others finding it inconsistent or requiring payment. The hotel features several bars, including a lobby bar praised for its selection of whiskies and gins, though the main public bar's drink choices receive mixed reviews. Evening entertainment, such as bingo and cabaret shows, is generally well-received, providing enjoyable options for guests, although some mention late start times or short durations.

Cleanliness & Room Comfort
Feedback on cleanliness and room comfort is quite varied. While some rooms are described as clean and recently refurbished, others are noted for issues such as dust, stains, unvacuumed carpets, and even mould, particularly in bathrooms. The overall room condition is often seen as dated and in need of significant refurbishment. Bed comfort receives mixed reviews, with many finding beds comfortable, while others report them as hard or having protruding springs. A common point of contention is the hotel's one-pillow-per-guest policy, with many guests expressing frustration over the inability to obtain additional pillows. Bathrooms frequently present issues like blocked sinks, unpleasant drain smells, non-working extractor fans, and a lack of towel rails or bath mats. In-room amenities typically include a kettle, tea and coffee facilities, an iron, and a fan, often needed due to the absence of air conditioning. Noise is a significant concern, primarily from loud seagulls in the early morning and internal disturbances like creaking floors or noisy neighbors. Many windows are reported as dirty, difficult to open, or not opening at all.

Dining & Food Quality
The hotel's dining experience, particularly for breakfast and dinner, receives mixed feedback. Breakfast is typically served buffet-style, with many guests finding it acceptable and offering a decent range of options, including cooked items, cereals, and fruit. However, a significant number of reviews describe the breakfast food quality as poor, citing issues such as thin bacon, watery eggs, tasteless sausages, and food being served cold. Some guests feel it is not worth the cost, especially given the early closing times. Similarly, dinner is also buffet-style and often criticized for being very poor or even inedible, with limited choices and a perception of cheap, pre-packed ingredients. Despite this, some guests find the dinner basic but satisfactory. The bar offerings are generally seen as competitively priced, with a good selection of single malts and gins available in the lobby bar, though the main public bar's selection is sometimes disappointing.

Location & Accessibility
The hotel's central location is a major highlight for most guests, offering excellent convenience for exploring the area. It is ideally situated near the seafront, providing easy access to the beach, Scarborough Castle, and various amusements. Guests appreciate its proximity to the town center and local attractions, as well as public transport options like the HOHO bus and the tram to the beach. However, parking is consistently identified as a significant challenge. The hotel lacks designated parking, leading to difficulties in finding spaces, expensive fees, and instances of guests receiving parking tickets. Many resort to using distant paid parking facilities. In terms of accessibility, the hotel, being an older building, features numerous stairs. While lifts are available, they are often described as slow, small, and sometimes out of order, which can be particularly inconvenient for guests with mobility issues. There is also no porterage service available.

Staff & Service
The staff at the hotel generally receive high praise for their friendliness, helpfulness, and attentiveness. Many guests highlight positive interactions with various team members, noting their willingness to assist and their polite demeanor. However, feedback regarding reception service is mixed. While some guests experience quick and efficient check-ins, others report encountering long queues and slow processing times, often exacerbated by the requirement for photo ID. Some specific interactions with reception staff are described as rude or unhelpful. A recurring point of concern is the housekeeping policy; there is no daily cleaning service, and guests frequently mention rooms not being serviced or cleaned adequately between stays, leading to issues with cleanliness and a lack of fresh towels or toiletries. The check-in process is often lengthy, and the check-out time is noted as being quite early, typically 10 or 11 AM.

Additional Information
Guests should be aware of several important operational aspects during their stay. The hotel operates a cashless policy, which some visitors find inconvenient as they prefer to use cash for budgeting. A photo ID requirement for check-in is strictly enforced and frequently causes significant delays and long queues, as many guests are unaware of this policy beforehand. Another common point of frustration is the hotel's policy of no baggage storage after check-out, forcing guests to carry their luggage if they wish to explore the area further. The hotel maintains a pet-friendly policy, accommodating guests with animals, though pets are not permitted in the dining areas. Some rooms experience issues with no hot water, particularly in showers, which can be a significant inconvenience. While air conditioning is not available, fans are typically provided in rooms. The hotel is undergoing ongoing renovations, with some areas showing significant improvements and fresh decor, while others remain dated and in need of attention, reflecting its historical character and the scale of the building.
