The Spa in Bridlington, East Yorkshire first opened to the public on the 27 July 1896. Originally called the New Spa and Gardens this 5-acre complex included landscaped gardens and an ornamental lake. By 1900 it was receiving 80,000 visitors a year. A fire destroyed a large part of the building in 1906. Today, The Spa is a multi-purpose complex that includes the Royal Hall, a glass dome roofed ballroom and a theatre. It also includes conference rooms, a restaurant, cafe and bars. Bridlington Council purchased The Spa in 1919 and they renovated it in 1925, which included the building of the Royal Hall. The majority of the gardens were however handed over to developers around this same time and the lake was filled. The Spa complex was most recently renovated between 2005 and 2008 and the Royal Hall is now regularly used to host large events including music concerts. The band Oasis sold out its 3,000-seat capacity within just two minutes of the tickets going on sale in July 2009. There is no charge to enter many parts of the complex but separate charges apply for the theatre and Royal Hall.
