Whitby Abbey was founded in 657AD and today its ruins stand high above the town and it is a major landmark. Within the walls of the Abbey there is a visitors centre which includes a display on St Hilda, a formidable Northumbrian Princess who was once the Abbess of this Abbey. There is also a display on Bram Stoker, the author of Dracula, who used this Gothic Abbey as the inspiration behind his creation. The whole site is now owned and managed by English Nature. The Cleveland Way” passes close to this attraction.
