Southsea Common (Southsea, United Kingdom)

Southsea Common is situated on Clarence Esplanade on Southsea seafront. It extends from Southsea Castle to Clarence Pier. Originally used as a location where armies assembled prior to battles, it was bought by Portsmouth Corporation in 1922. The common is mainly a large open area, but a bowling green, a skate park, tennis courts and a car park are also situated within it. The eastern area is known as the Ladies’ Mile. It is planted with avenues of trees and contains a number of flower beds. The skate park is in that part of the common. Portsmouth Navy Memorial is located on Southsea Common and is identical to the memorials at Plymouth and Chatham. It commemorates those who died at sea during World War I and World War II. Many of Southsea’s outdoor events are held on the common, such as the fiftieth anniversary of D-Day, the celebrations for Trafalgar 200 and the annual kite festival. Circuses often visit during school holidays. In the summer of 2010, a huge sculpture of a dinosaur was installed on Southsea Common, but unfortunately it was destroyed by fire.
