Royal Navy Submarine Museum (Gosport, United Kingdom)

The Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport stands on the site of a former submarine base. The submarine-shaped John Fieldhouse Building is named after the commander of the British naval forces in the Falklands War. The centrepiece of the museum is HMS Alliance, a 1947 submarine which visitors can walk round with guides who served on this class of boat. 4 other submarines are on display: Holland 1 was the navy’s first submarine, dating from 1901, HMS X24 is the only surviving British midget submarine from World War 2, while Biber is its one-man German equivalent. With LR3 we move into the 1980s as this was a deep-sea rescue submersible operating to depths of 1500 feet. The museum aims to inform and educate visitors, with school workshops linked to the national curriculum. But it also has a preservation and repair programme, notably at the moment of HMS Alliance. As well as the boats there is an extensive archive of artefacts and photos and on-going research on “personal testimonies”. Opening hours are 10am to 5.30pm April to October and to 4.30pm November to March. The museum has a car park, café, gift shop and outside picnic and play area. For disabled access see website.
