New Theatre Royal (Portsmouth, United Kingdom)

The New Theatre Royal is situated on Guildhall Walk, very close to Portsmouth University as well as the city centre. It is a Grade II listed building dating from the Victorian era. The original building was reconstructed twice, first by architect Charles Phipps and then at the beginning of the twentieth century by Frank Matcham. The backstage area was destroyed by fire in 1972, but plans are currently in place to restore it with the help of the university. The theatre hosts a variety of shows, ranging from drama and comedy to opera, classical music, dance and children’s shows. Tickets can be booked online, by post, by phone or in person at the box office. The New Theatre Royal is developing a Youth Theatre, organising events in the school holidays. The theatre is also in the process of establishing a Writers Hub for adults and a Writers Squad for teenagers. The theatre has two bars that open an hour before the start of a show. There is also the Conservatory Cafe on the premises, serving drinks and snacks. It is open on weekdays from 10am to 3pm and sometimes when there is a popular show in the evening.
