Shirebrook Valley (Sheffield, United Kingdom)

The Shirebrook Valley covers an area of 250 acres and is designated as a Local Nature Reserve (LNR). The site has recently undergone an extensive programme of clearing, cleaning and tree planting, this work was partly funded by English Nature. The valley follows the course of the Shire Brook, a tributary of the River Rother and the habitat within the valley includes woodland, wetland, ancient meadows and lowland heath. Historically the valley was rich in local industries with five different water wheels located along a small stretch of the river. Each of these wheels operated a small forge, making blades, scythes and other tools. Evidence of the Shirebrook Valley’s industrial past is still evident today and there are several small mill ponds that once fed the water wheels but now provide an important habitat for wildlife.
