Isle of Wight Music Festival (Newport, United Kingdom)

The original Isle of Wight festivals ran from 1968 to 1970. The last one in 1970 is famous for its huge attendance and line-up of iconic bands of the time such as The Who, The Doors, The Moody Blues, and Jimi Hendrix. It was revived in 2002 at a different location and has been run annually since then over three days in the middle of June. It is a traditional format providing on-site camping and non-stop performances. Attendance numbers are approx 50,000, of whom about 30,000 camp on the spot. The 2007 Festival was awarded Best Major Festival in the 2007 UK Festival Awards, and top bands performing at 2008 were Sex Pistols, The Police and Kaiser Chiefs. Tickets go on sale in the preceding December and sell out quickly. Additional ferry services from Southampton and Portsmouth are available and the island bus company provides shuttle services to the festival site. There is special provision for the disabled, with a designated platform, camping area and car park area.
