Carisbrooke Castle (Newport, United Kingdom)

Carisbrooke occupies a fine defensive position on a hilltop just south of Newport. The first castle was built in 1100 on the site of a Saxon stronghold and was a motte and bailey structure. Later a keep and curtain walls were added. It successfully resisted the French in 1377, was armoured as a defence against the Spanish Armada in 1588 and Charles I was imprisoned here before his execution. Its royal connections continued into the 20th century: Princess Beatrice, a daughter of Queen Victoria, lived here until 1944. It is now managed by English Heritage. The grounds are extensive and 30 to 40 minutes are recommended to walk round the battlements. Buildings can be visited, such as the chapel and well-house, where donkeys turn the wheel to raise the water. There is a museum with personal items belonging to Charles I. It is open every day, except Christmas and New Year, from 10am to 5pm (April to September) and to 4pm during October to March. The website has details of wheelchair access. The site has a shop, tearoom and picnic area.
