Hexham Abbey (Hexham, United Kingdom)

Hexham Abbey was founded by St Wilfred, a Benedictine, in 674AD. Since that time it has been used as an Augustinian Priory and the parish church of this Northumberland town. The seventh century crypt can be found in the nave. Parts of the present building date from the 1300s to the 1600s. There is a staircase (the Night Stair) in the south transept which leads up to the sleeping quarters. Guided tours can be arranged with the Abbey Administrator. There is a book and gift shop. Opening hours (services permitting) 9:30am 5:00pm (October to April) 9:30am 7:00pm (May to September) The Crypt 11:00 am and 3:30 pm There is a car park in the locality
