Housesteads Roman Fort (Bardon Mill, United Kingdom)

Housesteads is described as the “most complete Roman fort in Britain”.It was one of the forts built on Hadrian’s Wall in the early 2nd century and was garrisoned until the Empire withdrew at the beginning of the 5th century. There is also evidence of a civilian settlement outside the walls.Remains of all types of buildings found in forts can be seen here: barracks, commander’s house, hospital, granaries, entrance gates and a latrine.Hadrian’s Wall forms the north wall of the fort and the Hadrian’s Wall Path runs along it.Passage through the Wall at this point was by the Knag Burn Gate below the fort which can still be seen, together with the path leading up to the fort. The area is owned by the National Trust but the Housesteads site is managed by English Heritage. There is a small museum in the administrative building with a model reconstruction of how the fort would have looked. The most significant finds, however, are in the Museum of Antiquities in Newcastle or the John Clayton Collection at Chesters. Visitors with limited mobility should be aware that there is a fairly steep climb of about 0.5 miles from the car park to the fort. There is a charge for the car park, and refreshments and toilets are also available there. Opening times are daily 21 March - 30 September 10am - 6pm and to 4pm for the rest of the year. Closed 24 - 26 December and 1 January.
