Harbour and Pier (St. Andrews, United Kingdom)

St Andrews harbour used to be a significant place of international commerce, but is now just a sleepy fishing and leisure harbour. The original harbour goes back to the medieval period, but the current pier that dominates it was constructed in the 17th century with the rubble from the ruins of the Cathedral. The harbour has two sections, one tidal and one behind a small lock with a raised bridge. The bridge leads over the dunes to the East Sands beach. There is a cafe with refreshments and fish and chips. The pier is associated with one of the University traditions - the Pier Walk after the Sunday church service, with red-begowned students walking to the end after the chapel.
