Lincoln Castle is of historical significance and dates back to the time of William the Conqueror, who ordered its construction in 1068. It is a Motte and Bailey type castle, and has two Mottes, one of only two examples of this type in the UK. Lincoln Castle is also home to the Lincoln Magna Carta, one of four surviving examples in the UK. Having been used as a prison, and as a gaol, now Lincoln Castle dominates the city skyline and is one of the citys main tourist attractions.
