Thessalonika International Airport Macedonia at Mikra is the largest in northern Greece, and has grown from a military base in 1930 to a modern airport meeting all European standards. 15 scheduled flight airlines use it, as well as many charter flights. International destinations are all in Europe and it provides connecting flights to other Greek airports. In common with many other airports, it is planning for increased passenger traffic. There is a plan for a bigger terminal which could accommodate 9 million passengers annually, and a longer runway to allow long haul flights. It is the airport for the tourist destinations of Chalkidiki, Thassos and Skiathos. A bus route with a 24 hour service and a motorway provide transport links to the city 15 kilometres away, and a taxi stand is also available. A metro station is planned. The airport has all modern facilities such as car parking, car hire, shops, cafés and banks.
