Selby Abbey (Selby, United Kingdom)

Selby Abbey dates back to 1069 when it was founded by a French monk called the Benedict of Auxerre, although its construction took 130 years to complete. Its interior bears many similarities to Durham Cathedral, on which it was partially modelled, but apart from its Tower the majority of the building dates from after the 17th century, after the church was heavily restored. Following a fire in 1906 it was restored again. One of the features that predates this restoration is the 14th century Washington Window, a large stained glass window, which features the family coat of arms of the family of America’s first President George Washington. Selby Abbey survived the Dissolution of the Monasteries because it was turned into the parish church. The abbey is open daily for visitors and admission is free of charge.
