It was King Frederic William IV himself who planed and designed this castle, from 1847 on it was built by Ludwig Persius, Friedrich Stüler und Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse. Much smaller than originally planned it was completed in 1863, originally the king had wanted a large residence with grand staircases and water displays. The result is an Italian Renaissance style villa, crowned by two twin towers, with panoramic views due to its elevated position. From 1945 on the building declined and could only be saved and restored thanks to many donations, many from the founder of the German mail-order company Otto, and the foundation of the Pfingstberg eV association who also manages the complex. Since 2003 it is possible to visit the castle again. All rooms and towers of Belvedere are accessible for visitors but some can only be reached via, sometimes narrow and steep, staircases.
