Checkpoint Charlie was the famous crossing point through the Berlin Wall from 1961 to 1990. It connected Soviet and American sectors. The checkpoint was one of three that has been inspected by the Americans. The other ones were the border checkpoints Helmstedt-Marienborn (Checkpoint Alpha) and Dreilinden-Drewitz (Checkpoint Bravo). The crossing could only be used by tourists from abroad, diplomats and the military personnel of the Western Powers on a one-day visa basis. This way the checkpoint could stop emigration flows over the city sector border from East Berlin to West Berlin. After the reunification of Germany the checkpoint Charlie was abolished. Nowadays, it can be seen in the AlliiertenMuseum. Next to the museum remains the guard house from Checkpoint Charlie, which became a tourist attraction. Checkpoint Charlie is situated next to U-bahn station Kochstraße.
