Hôtel de Ville et son Beffroi (Lille, France)

Lille town hall and belfry are not ancient structures, having been built in the 1930s. Nevertheless, they carry on a regional tradition of splendour in civic buildings, and the belfry, along with others in northern France and Belgium, is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage site list. The belfry is 104m high and dominates the city. The architect Emile Dubuisson, who designed both the tower and the town hall, combined local Flemish traditions with modern materials, especially brick which is a local building feature. It is the highest civilian belfry in northern Europe and its weight exceeds the Eiffel Tower. The town hall is particularly noted for its grand gallery which runs the width of the building and is supported by columns. The buildings were located in the poor St Sauveur district, and were intended also as a form of urban planning to open up the area. The belfry can be climbed on Saturdays and Sundays at 10.30am and 11.30am; booking at the tourist office. It is not recommended for visitors with mobility problems as there are 100 steps to climb to get access to the lift.
