Chatelherault Country Park (Hamilton, United Kingdom)

Chatelherault Country Park in Hamilton has been created around the buildings and grounds of Chatelherault, a former hunting lodge of the Duke of Hamilton. The house was built in 1732 at the entrance to Hamilton Palace, since demolished. The name derives from Châtellerault, in France, as Duc de Châtellerault was one of the Duke of Hamilton’s titles. The estate passed to the nation in the 1970s on the death of the 14th duke. Restoration and opening it up to public access was completed in the 1980s. The former banqueting room and private apartments can be visited, and original Georgian plasterwork can be seen. A visitor centre has been added. The gorge of the River Avon, which joins the Clyde at Hamilton, cuts through the grounds, and provides walking and cycle trails through ancient woodland rich in wildlife. From the lodge itself there are views as far as Glasgow. Entrance and parking is free. For public transport there is a railway station at the entrance. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday 10am - 5pm, Sunday 12noon - 5pm, main house Monday to Thursday 10am - 4.30pm.
