Yad Vashem (Jerusalem, Israel)

Yad Vashem is Israel’s national memorial to the Holocaust, the Nazi-sponsored policy of genocide that effectively destroyed the Jewish communities of continental Europe. Established in 1953, Yad Vashem’s mission was to honor the victims of this unique human tragedy through a program that stresses commemoration, education, research, and documentation. The 45-acre complex is located on Har HaZikaron (the Mount of Remembrance) on the western outskirts of modern Jerusalem. The displays in Yad Vashem’s museum and gardens include period artifacts, monuments and memorials, works of art, and a collection of the survivors testimonies, all focused on the events of this era. Special emphasis has been paid to an effort to assemble victims’ names and biographical information, so that they will not be forgotten, as well as the names of ‘righteous’ non-Jews who worked to save the lives of their Jewish neighbors. The Yad Vashem Archives contains the world’s largest collection of Holocaust-related documentation, and the Library houses a comprehensive collection of publications in over 50 languages. Together these facilities form an important center for research on issues related to the Holocaust.
