Hagia Sophia (Istanbul, Turkey)

The Hagia Sophia, also known as Church of the Holy Wisdom, is one of Istanbuls most well known landmarks. The Hagia Sophia in its present form was constructed in between 532 and 537on the site of two earlier churches. Until the construction of the Cathedral of Seville in 1520 it remained the largest cathedral that had ever been built. The Hagia Sophie is especially famous for its 56m high and 31m wide massive dome and is regarded as one of the masterpieces of Byzantine architecture. After the Ottoman Conquest of Constantinople in 1453 the church, which had also been the patriarchal church of the Patriarch of Constantinople for many centuries, was converted into a mosque and the four minarets were added to it. The Hagia Sophia served as the principal mosque of Istanbul until it was converted into a museum in 1934. The Ayasofya Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday 10 am to 4.30 pm
