Galata Tower (Istanbul, Turkey)

The Galata Tower was originally built as a fortification in 1348. It is located on a prominent hillside in the Galata suburb of Istanbul and stands 67 metres high ensuring that it can be seen from many miles around. At the time of its construction it was the tallest building in Istanbul. During the 1960’s the Galata Tower was modernised and now contains nine different storeys, one of which has been converted into a restaurant. The ornamental top of the structure is now an observation deck that provides a panoramic view of the city, whilst another floor is used as a nightclub and hosts live shows. Two lifts are installed at either side of the tower to take visitors to the different levels. There is an admission charge of 10 Turkish Lira to enter the tower (approximately 5 Euros). It is well served by public transport.
