The name of this group - meaning “princes’ islands” - derives from a number of monasteries where Byzantine princes where exiled to. Büyükada and its sister islands feature a rich vegetation and hiking routes. They can be accessed by ferryboats from various ferryports in Istanbul. No motorised vehicles are allowed on the islands. There is a population of 20.000 living on the islands which increases dramatically in summer.
