De Wallen - de rosse buurt (Amsterdam, Netherlands)

The Red Light District of Amsterdam is located in one of the oldest parts of the city and covers a large part of the historic old town. It can be found near Damm Square in between Warmoesstraat, Zeedijk, Nieuwmarkt, Kloveniersburgwal and Damstraat. The history of the area as a place for prostitution, which is legal in the Netherlands, dates back to the 14th century when it was especially popular with sailors. Today it attracts many tourists and is home to many brothels, sex shops, gay bars, cinemas, theatres, and especially well known for the many windows in which sparsely dressed girls are waiting, trying to attract customers. Further there is also a large number of restaurants, museums and coffee shops. Apart from being an area for adult entertainment the Red Light District also features a wealth of historic gabled buildings which line the streets along the canals.
