Corfe Castle (Wareham, United Kingdom)

Sited in a gap in the Purbeck hills the castle was in a perfect location to defend inland Dorset from sea invaders. The castle was begun by William the Conqueror and served the royal families and others for 600 years. It was destroyed in 1646 following a siege by the Parliamentarians during the English Civil War. The site is now controlled by the National Trust. It is worth noting at the time of this writing that extensive restoration work is going on. It is best to contact the web site or telephone for further information. Hours of operation vary by time of year. Always opening at 10 a.m. the castle closes at 4 p.m. from Nov 1, 2007 through Feb 28, 2008. It closes at 6 p.m. April 1 to Sept 30, 2007 and at 5 p.m. from Oct 1 through Oct 31, 2007 Admission varies by age with adults paying £5.30, children £2.70 and families £13.30. If one arrives via public transport verifiably they will be given a voucher for the National Trust shop or tea room at the castle.
