BBC Proms (London, United Kingdom)

The BBC Proms, short for Promenade Concerts, take place every summer in London from mid July to mid September. A series of over 70 concerts is performed, mostly in the Royal Albert Hall, although some chamber recitals and pre-performance talks are held in smaller venues. The Proms attracts world-class musicians and aims to cover all types of music including the classical repertoire, modern pieces, and new works specially commissioned. The first Prom concerts were in 1895, the brainchild of Robert Newman and developed by Sir Henry Wood. Their aim was always to make music available to a wide audience and this ethos remains with cheap “promenader” standing places at low cost. All the Proms are broadcast on radio and many are televised. The most famous Prom is the Last Night which concludes with enthusiastic audience involvement in the Sea Shanties, Rule Britannia, and Land of Hope and Glory. Since 1996 the Last Night has been extended into Hyde Park and parks in other cities where thousands more enjoy their own live concert ending with a link-up to the Albert Hall.
