30 St Mary Axe - The Gherkin (London, United Kingdom)

30 St Mary Axe in London is affectionately known by locals as ‘The Gherkin’ or by some as the ‘Erotic Gherkin’ due to its very unusual shape. It is the second tallest building in the business district known as ‘The City’ and the 6th tallest building in London at 180 m high. It is a working office building that’s owned by the companies Swiss Re and Kirkland and Ellis. The top of the building has a unique restaurant and lounge bar but these are only accessible by the building’s tenants and their guests during the day and available for public hire during the evenings. The building was designed by the architecture firm Foster and Partners and was created as an environmentally progressive working environment in which design elements combine maximum natural lighting with natural ventilation system. It was opened in 2004 and took 7 years to build. It is located on the site of the old Baltic Exchange building which was damaged by an IRA bomb in 1992.
