Petticoat Lane Market (London, United Kingdom)

Petticoat Lane is the most famous of London’s street markets, although there is no longer an actual street of that name. The market was only formalised by an Act of Parliament in 1936 but had existed for centuries before that. Even before the Great Fire in 1666 it was known as an area of garment makers, and at the end of the 17th century the exiled Huguenots sold lace garments here. The east end of London has long been associated with the clothing trade, usually practised by the various waves of immigrants. After the Huguenots the Jews arrived at the end of the 19th century, then in the 1970s Asians revitalised the area. There is a popular story that the Victorians objected to the name “Petticoat” and had the street renamed Middlesex Street, but it was more prosaically to record the boundary between the City and Whitechapel. The main market is on Sundays but it is open Monday to Friday on Wentworth Street. It is closed on Saturdays. More than 1000 stalls trade on Sundays, still selling principally clothing. Visitors come to see the patter and performance of the stallholders as well as buying goods.
