Woking Town Centre was first laid out in the 19th century and underwent major redevelopment in the 1960s. Its current development is the subject of a local plan to ensure a sympathetic environment. As the largest shopping area in the borough, and the second largest in Surrey, retail is an important element and there are shopping malls, The Peacocks and Wolsey Place, as well as the more traditional High Street parade and a market six days a week in Market Square. Leisure activities provided include the complex containing the New Victoria Theatre and Ambassadors Cinema, and The Big Apple which has bowling, pool, laserquest, bars and a children’s play area. The Basingstoke Canal runs through the town centre and is navigable on this section. It provides a “green corridor” with walking and cycling paths. The Canal and part of the High Street form a conservation area for their historic interest.
