Weoley Castle (Birmingham, United Kingdom)

All that remains of Weoley Castle are some ruins, which are not accessible to visitors. However, the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, which is responsible for the Castle, has provided a viewing area with information panels about the history of the building and the excavation finds. The site was inhabited from the 12th century and was mentioned in the Domesday Book. The original building was wooden, and that was replaced by a medieval manor house, surrounded by a moat. The dry moat can still be seen, as can the remains of the bakehouse and the supports for the drawbridge. The finds, now in the main Birmingham Museum, indicate that the family was wealthy. Admission is free. The site is open from 31 March to 28 October, on weekends and Bank Holidays only. Events and historical reconstructions are often staged.
