Thermes de Constantin (Arles, France)

Although much of the building is hidden under later development, it has been established that these are the largest Roman baths in Provence. An integral part of Roman city life, the baths not only provided a range of hot and cold plunges, steam rooms and massage, but were also a social meeting place and sports centre. The baths date from the 4th century; they were a comparatively late development in Roman history and only came into prominence with the invention of hypocausts, the underfloor heating system. The tepidarium (warm room) and caldarium (hot room) are extant and the hypocausts are still visible. Leading off the caldarium is an apse-shaped bathing pool area. Together with the other Roman and medieval remains in Arles, the baths have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Opening hours are on the website and a combined ticket for the baths and the amphitheatre can be purchased.
