St Mary's Church Canons Ashby (Daventry, United Kingdom)

St Mary’s Church, Canons Ashby is one of just 4 private parish churches in England. It predates the nearby Canons Ashby house by several centuries and is all that remains today of what was once a much larger Augustinian Priory. It is built of local orange iron stone and dates to 1250, though the priory was founded 100 years earlier. In 1536 the priory was one of the first to be dissolved under Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries and he gave the priory to one of his friends who destroyed most of it, leaving just the small church and the bell tower. The church is managed by the National Trust but can be visited without the need to pay for entrance to Canons Ashby House. Service times are posted outside.
