Lunan Bay (Montrose, United Kingdom)

Lunan Bay is a large, sandy beach located south of Montrose on the Angus coast between the Lang Craig and the Boddin Point. It was voted Scotland’s best beach in 2000 and it is listed among Scotland’s best beaches in Peter Irvine’s cult guide ‘‘Scotland the Best’’. Framed by high, sandy dunes with tussock grass, Lunan Bay’s shallow cove is 3 miles long. Lunan Water enters the sea at Lunan Bay, and some remains of WW2 defences. On a sandy cliff above the bay there are ruins of the Red Castle, built in the 12th Century to protect this area against the Viking raids. It fell into ruin towards the end of the 16th century and now remains a ruin inhabited by nesting birds only. The area is well known for birds, including puffins in the nesting season. There is a public car park near the beach with a boardwalk leading to an observation platform and the access to the sands (though the beach itself is not wheelchair accessible). There are also picnic tables near the car park.
