House Mill (London, United Kingdom)

House Mill is located on Three Mills Island in the middle of the industrial heartland of East London, in an area where several historic industrial buildings can be found. The Three Mills date back to 1066 and have been mentioned in the doomsday book in 1086 when 8 mills in the area have been recorded. House Mill is the largest tidal mill which is still standing in Britain and was operative until 1941. It is recorded that House Mill was used to grind grain to produce gin. Visitors can explore the 5 floors of the timber frame construction which was restored to its former glory after being severely damaged during WW2. Inside the building are many original tools, millstones and waterwheels to be seen, as well as the Mill House Garden. The House Mill also features a Visitor and Education Centre and a Café. Opening times : Every 1.st Sunday of the month from 11am to 4 pm All other Sundays from 1pm to 4pm (Tour lasts approximately 45 minutes, children go for free)
