Brecon Beacons National Park (Brecon, United Kingdom)
Brecon Beacons National Park covers an area of 520 square miles between south and mid Wales. It was established in 1957 to “conserve and enhance” the natural environment and to “promote opportunities” for its enjoyment. The landscape falls into four distinct blocks of hills, from east to west: the Black Mountains, the Central Beacons, Fforest Fawr and Y Mynydd Du. The highest point is just under 1000 metres. The geology varies from old red sandstone to limestone along the southern edge. This limestone is the source of caves with stalactite and stalagmite formations and hollows known as swallow holes. It is also famous for its waterfalls. The Fforest Fawr area has been given UNESCO Geopark status, in recognition of its regional geological significance. Activities include climbing, walking, biking, caving and fishing, Main attractions are the Brecon Mountain Railway, Dan-yr-Ogof Showcaves, Pen y Fan (the highest point and a popular walk to the top) and the ruins of Carreg Cennen Castle perched on a cliff. The headquarters of the Park Authority is in Brecon where there is also a visitor centre.
