Amphitheatre (Trier Treves, Germany)

The Roman Amphittheatre of Trier is located just outside of the medieval city wall and not far from the Imperial Baths. The arena dates back to the second century AD and was big enough to offer space for 20.000 spectators. It was used for combats with gladiators and animals, the cages of the animals were housed in the thick surrounding walls of the theatre. Wild animals, together with prisoners who were awaiting the death sentence, were kept in the cellars beneath the arena. Because of its acoustics it is still used to host open-air concerts and the annually held Antiquity Festival. The Roman Amphitheatre, together with other historical significant buildings in Trier, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. Opening hours: April - September: 9 am to 6 pm October: 9 am - 5 pm November - February: 9 am - 4 pm March: 9 am - 5 pm Last admission 30 minutes before closing time.
