The Völklingen Ironworks were the first Industrial Heritage Site to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1994. The iron works in Völklingen cover an area of around 6 ha within the city and have gone out of production in 1986. Today they are the last remaining intact example of an integrated ironworks from the 19th century that still exists in Europe and Northern America. During a visit you can venture deep down into the depths of the former ironworks and explore the 5 km of walkways which will lead you to every aspect of the site. You may want to enjoy the views over the city from the platform on the top of the blast furnace or a picnic in the newly designed picnic area at the former granulating plant. The newly added Science Centre Ferrodrom is an interactive museum with the aim to bring visitors of all ages closer to the world of steel production and exhibitions and events are being held regularly on the site. For information on ticketing and opening hours please refer to the website.
