Review summary

This AI-generated summary was based on reviews from multiple
sites

The hotel stands out as a vibrant and welcoming hub in the heart of Kelso, renowned for its exceptional culinary offerings and lively bar atmosphere. Guests consistently highlight the outstanding quality and variety of food, from delicious breakfasts to excellent dinner options, alongside the unwavering friendliness and attentiveness of the staff. Its prime central location makes it an ideal base for sightseers and explorers wishing to discover the town's attractions, while the comfortable and clean rooms provide a restful retreat. The hotel caters well to food enthusiasts and social travelers seeking a vibrant local experience, as well as couples and families looking for a convenient and hospitable stay. For those sensitive to noise, it is advisable to request a room away from the street or bar area, and booking a table for dinner is recommended due to the restaurant's popularity.

Facilities & Amenities
The hotel offers a range of amenities designed for guest comfort and convenience, blending traditional charm with modern touches. Guests appreciate the presence of large TVs in the rooms, some even equipped with streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, providing entertainment options. Rooms are generally well-equipped with tea and coffee making facilities, and some include a fan for added comfort during warmer periods. A significant point for guests with mobility concerns is the absence of an elevator, meaning access to rooms on higher levels involves navigating stairs. The hotel's bar is frequently praised for its lively atmosphere and wide selection of drinks, including various gins and beers, making it a popular social spot for both guests and locals to unwind and enjoy the vibrant ambiance.

Cleanliness & Room Comfort
Guests consistently commend the cleanliness of the rooms, describing them as spotless and immaculate. The beds are frequently highlighted as comfortable and large, ensuring a restful night's sleep, though a few guests noted that some double beds were formed from two singles, leading to a slight dip. Rooms are generally spacious and well-equipped, often featuring a large TV, tea and coffee making facilities, and a bottle of water. Many bathrooms are described as lovely and spacious, with some recently refurbished to include wet rooms or offering a large bath and good shower, though a few mentioned issues with shower power or toilet functionality. Noise levels receive mixed feedback; while some rooms are noted as very quiet, others, particularly those facing the street or located above the bar, experienced street noise or sounds from late-night revelers and an extraction fan.

Dining & Food Quality
The hotel's dining experience is a significant highlight for many guests, with the food quality frequently described as excellent and delicious. The breakfast receives widespread praise for its outstanding variety, offering a buffet of cereals, fruits, and pastries, complemented by a selection of hot cooked options such as the full Scottish breakfast, omelettes, and even unique choices like haddock with eggs. Portions are consistently noted as generous and good value. For dinner, guests enjoy a wide menu choice featuring popular dishes like fish and chips, lasagne, steak and mushroom pie, and salmon pasta, often served piping hot and well-presented. While the majority of feedback is positive, a few isolated reviews mentioned issues with overcooked or tasteless dishes, and some found the chips to be cold. The restaurant atmosphere is generally considered pleasant, and the service is often described as efficient and attentive, even during busy periods.

Location & Accessibility
The hotel boasts an excellent central location in Kelso, making it incredibly convenient for exploring the town. Guests appreciate its proximity to key attractions such as the Kelso Abbey, which is just a stone's throw away, and its position right off the town square. This prime spot places guests within easy walking distance of local shops, eateries, and other points of interest, including the racecourse and various local events. For those arriving by public transport, the hotel is well-situated with bus connections to nearby towns like Berwick-upon-Tweed available just around the corner. While the hotel itself does not have a dedicated car park, guests generally find easy street parking nearby, often with free overnight options, though some advise dropping off luggage first due to potential walking distance.

Staff & Service
The staff at the hotel consistently receive high praise for their exceptional friendliness and attentiveness. Guests frequently highlight their helpfulness and welcoming demeanor, noting that staff members go out of their way to ensure a comfortable stay, making guests feel like nothing is too much trouble. The check-in process is often described as quick and efficient. Specific mentions include the cheerful and efficient service in the dining areas, and the overall accommodating nature of the team. The hotel also offers a dog-friendly service in its bar area, which is appreciated by pet owners. While the vast majority of feedback is overwhelmingly positive, a very small number of isolated comments mentioned an unhelpful interaction with a specific bar staff member, but this is an anomaly compared to the widespread commendation for the team's overall excellent customer service.

Additional Information
The hotel, housed in a 300-year-old building, retains much of its traditional character and charm, which guests find appealing. However, this historic structure means there are quirky levels and numerous stairs, making it potentially unsuitable for guests with mobility issues as there is no elevator. Some guests noted minor maintenance points such as windows that didn't open or appeared uncleaned, and occasional issues with radiators or TV functionality. A few isolated comments mentioned a smell of damp in the hallway or sticky tables in the bar area. One guest reported an unexpected service charge added to their bill. Despite these minor points, many guests consider the hotel to offer excellent value for money, particularly given the quality of the food and service.
