The first phase of restoration work at Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham, London, was completed in 2010 and the house opened to the public. It was created by Horace Walpole in the mid 18th century, during the Gothic revival in architecture, and became “Britain’s finest example” of the genre. Even during Walpole’s lifetime it was already a tourist attraction. Taking the medieval Gothic cathedrals as his inspiration, he created arches, rose windows and carved screens, but in keeping with his idea of the building as a “plaything” these details are in wood or plaster, not stone. The dark, grey-coloured hall and staircase are in dramatic contrast to colourful and ornate rooms, an effect Walpole was seeking. The highlight is the Gallery, complete with restored Gothic dado and crimson wall hangings. Other rooms to be seen include the Library, Tribune and Bedchamber. Outside a landscape garden was laid out to offset the house, and this is being recreated. A timed ticket system is in operation and visitors are recommended to book in advance on-line. There is a café and shop. Limited car parking is available, and the attraction is well served by public transport.
