Ras Mohamed National Park (Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt)
The Ras Mohamed National Park is located at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. It lies in an area of extremely low rainfall and temperatures regularly reach over 40 degrees Celsius. Inland the terrain is that of dry desert but along the coast there are mangrove forests and rich vegetation. This unique environment provides an important habitat for a number of rare birds, mammals, insects and plants. It is also a major resting place for migrating birds during spring and autumn. The whole area covers 480 square kilometres and was declared a National Park in 1983 in order to protect it from the resort of Sharm el Sheikh, 12 kilometres away, which was rapidly expanding southwards. The name Ras Mohamed literally means Mohammad’s Head, which refers to the headland on which the park is located. The shoreline of the park is ecologically important for its marine life and is home to over 150 different species of coral and over 1000 species of fish. It is a popular location for scuba divers. A visitor centre and car parking area is located close to Marsa Ghozlani although there are many different access points into the park.
