Old Town of Kerkyra (Corfu-Town, Greece)

The Old Town of Corfu is said to be one of the most romantic places in Greece. It is almost closed between two fortresses, designed by famous Venetian engineers. The Old fortress was built for defence against the Ottoman Empire. The New fortress is a building of the 16th century. The town has been developed with high buildings and narrow paved streets. The urban and port ensemble of Corfu has its specific identity and as such, it can be placed alongside other major Mediterranean fortified port cities. Between the town and the old fortress there is the Esplanade, a large green area with complete absence of buildings. Today it is a garden full of trees. From 2007 the Old Town of Corfu has been in the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
