Humberto Delgado Airport (Lisbon, Portugal)

Lisbon Portela Airport is the main airport in Portugal and one of the largest in southern Europe. It has two main runways, which can handle Boeing 747s, and nearly 40 airlines use it, linking to over 80 destination airports. In 2007 it handled over 13m passengers. It is the main base for the national carrier TAP. The airport is actually inside the Lisbon city boundary, only 7 kilometres north of the city centre and although its growth has played an important role in local and national development, a new airport is proposed at Alcochete. This is about 50 kilometres south east of Lisbon and is scheduled for completion in 2017. To cope with traffic until then, an expansion of terminal 1, which handles international flights, is proposed, together with a new metro station. The two terminals provide all the expected passenger services: bars and restaurants, banks, shops, car hire. Given its position, access to the city centre is quick by taxi or shuttle bus. For visitors staying outside the city at Cascais or Estoril there is an hourly shuttle bus.
