Forteresse de Salses (Salses-le-Château, France)

This castle was built by the Spanish at the end of the 15th century to protect what was then the border between Catalonia and France. It is remarkable for its military architecture, representing a transition between the medieval style, with cylindrical towers and curtain walls, and the more modern geometric, low-rise structure with underground fortifications designed to resist cannon-balls. With its 10m thick walls, it is a labyrinth of communication passages and defensive chicanes. In the event of attack there were three self-contained areas: the central courtyard, the redoubt which housed the important stores and utilities and the 20m high donjon, the last refuge. After changing hands several times it was finally retaken by the French in 1642. The Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659 saw the end of its strategic importance. Opening hours are 9.30am to 7pm June to September, 10am to 12.15pm and 2pm to 5pm October to May. Closed 1 January. 1 May, 1 and 11 November, 25 December. Leaflets are available in several languages. Allow about ½ hour for the visit.Guided tours are available, with 2 weeks’ notice. There are toilets and a shop, and facilities for handicapped visitors.
