Dornoch Beach is a 6-mile-long crescent of fine golden sand located on the Firth of Dornoch. The beach is adjacent to Royal Dornoch Golf Club, which provides access to visitors. It is also adjacent to a dune-bounded area designated as a ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’ for nesting birds and for other fauna and flora indigenous to the region. The beach is popular with bathers, beachcombers, and those who enjoy parasailing and paragliding. On its north end, the fine sand of this beach is interspersed with large black boulders, providing shelters for tidal pools beaming with the minature lifeforms that flourish on the margin between land and sea. In 2004, Dornoch Beach was recognized with a ‘Rural Seaside Award’ for its cleanliness. Facilities include a playground for children, a car park, benches, and toilets. The path cresting the dune warns visitors to beware of golf balls that may stray out of bounds from the nearby links.
