Doge's Palace (Venice, Italy)

The Doge’s Palace is located in Venice and is a gothic palace. The Doge of Venice is a resident of the palace. The palace faces the Venetian Lagoon and Saint Mark’s Square. The building has different colour contrasts. The palace was built between 1309 and 1424 by Filippo Calendario. The monumental late-gothic gate was built in 1442 and leads to the central courtyard. In 1574, the palace was damaged by fire. It was rebuilt using its original gothic style. The palace has been linked to the prison by the Bridge of Sighs. Until the Napoleonic occupation of the city, the palace hosted the political institutions of the Republic of Venice. Nowadays the palace is protected and has been turned into a museum.
